Red Letter Dates in Maseru United Church History

1908 – 1910 A small congregation of “non-conformist” believers began to meet together in Maseru

1924 The Methodist “circuit riding preacher” began to serve the Ladybrand congregation from Maseru. Before this time, Maseru was served from Ladybrand.

1935 Communicants numbered 122 , ie. 70 Methodists and 52 Presbyterians

1948 Foundation stone of current building laid on December 1, 1948.

1957 Construction of Church Hall

1959 100 communicants. Dutch Reformed Church ceased to share (with the Methodists and Presbyterians) in the conducting of services.

1966 Lesotho’s Independence. Membership went down to 65.

1973 Crisis. Membership down to 10. Accepted aid and leadership of the Mennonite church in USA – which they provided for the next 20 years.

1980 Material Aid Committee was formed.

1987 Education Building was constructed.

1990 Attendance at 170 adults plus twice that many children.

1992 The sanctuary was extended.

1994 Nelson Mandela elected President of RSA. Lesotho was no longer a “front line state”. Resulting exodus of many expatriates and attendance at MUC went down.

1998 Riots on Kingsway and Palace Road and engagement with SADC forces resulted in a couple of direct hits to the church building, but services were never suspended throughout the months of unrest.

1999 The 5-metre high cross was erected at midnight of December 31 to celebrate the millennium.

2000 Attendance up and more varied. 33 countries represented in the congregation

2008 Beginning of Centennial Celebrations – “To God be the Glory. Great things He has done!”
